California - LPN/LVN BY ENDORSEMENT

Hi there:

- Can anyone tell me the procedure (what steps one must go through) in order
to get an LPN/LVN licence by endorsement in California?

- I am currently licensed in New York and Rhode Island, and would like to eventually do some travel nurse (LPN/LVN) work in California.

Thanks!!!

Tacylyn:

Thanks for the reply.

I tried the above site ... but they say one needs to "contact the board directly" with regards to information regarding LVN license by endorsement. I was hoping someone on this board (www.allnurses.com) could let me know what the process entails.

Unfortunately, I am away from home this week -- and only have access to one of those TracPhone cell phones that run about 20 cents per minute.

---

All:

Anyhow, if anyone here has any info regarding the California LPN/LVN licence by endorsement ... would like to hear about it.

Thanks!!!

First you need to get an application for licensure from the Board of Nursing. The application will ask if you are applying for licensure by endorsement or examination. Just fill in the blanks on the application and it tells you everything you need to send to the board. (transcipts, fees, etc.) The process takes about 6-8 weeks.

Cali:

- Does the LVN board grant temporary licenses -- or does one have to wait the 6 to 8 weeks?

- What about fingerprint cards? I saw that fingerprint cards are required for RN licensure, what
about for LPN licensure?

Thanks in advance,

Yes, fingerprint cards are required. But they give you the option to get the livescan version and it says right on the application that using livescan gets your results back to the board in a shorter time period.

Don't know the anwer about temporary licenses.

Please do the livescan fingerprinting as Caliotter3 stated above if you can. It's alot quicker. When I applied for my LVN license for California I had to do the fingerprint cards twice which made my wait even longer. I recently did licensure by endorsement to Illinois though and I had to use one of their livescan facilities out there. Hopefully you'll be able to use livescan in your state and have it sent to California. As far as a temporary LVN license...I've never heard of anyone having one, but that doesn't mean they don't give them. I was given that option when I endorsed my RN license to Illinois but I don't know if LVN/LPN's get the same option. Sorry, you'll have to save that question for the BON. Good Luck!

Cali:

- Thanks for the information. I will call the California BON on Monday when I get back to NY (am currently doing agency work this weekend in RI).

- FYI: For Rhode Island ... all I did was show up at the BON and they issued me a temporary 90 day license in 15 minutes. I received the permanent LPN license in about 4 weeks, and the cost was around US $70.

- I am currently taking a Chemistry class (brick-and-mortar college). That wraps up in mid-December then I am doing the Excelsior LPN-RN program ... which means I can finally do some travelling.

- I've seen a fairly decent number of LPN jobs (travel) offered for California ... so figured I would like to give it a try. Been there many times (when I was in the Software industry) ... and really liked northern California (Redding and Dunsmuir).

- Anyhow, thanks for the information. Will keep you posted.

If you can get through on the phone, you should call the board directly. Most of the time they are difficult to get in touch with by phone. But you could get your answers. Also, just go ahead and go to the web site, download the application, and start the process. You might find no complications. Like Cali said, the application is very detailed in its instructions. Good luck.
