Crap. I was doing SO well! I was averaging 95% for the labs and essays, and I got an 89 on the midterm. Then I had two HUGE labs due a couple weeks ago (digestive system). That weekend we went to So. Cal to take the kids to Disneyland. Due to the weather (that was the weekend of all the flooding and that awful mudslide), we didn't get home until Sunday (labs were due midnight Saturday) and I didn't get the labs turned in until Monday. Because I've never turned in homework late before, I didn't pay much attention to the late policy. Anything over 24 hours late gets 0%. This was over 200 points! DAMN. Why couldn't it have been the week before, where it was just ONE lab worth 80 points? I figured out that the labs are going to total around 1400 points, so that will reduce my 95% average to around 80%. Which means the only possible way I'll be able to pass the class with an A is if I get around 95% on the final.

I know it's not the end of the world (I got B's in both Micro and BIO201) but it would have been so cool to have passed this class - my LAST prereq - with an A.

Sorry to hear about that. Have you talked to your teacher for some lenience? Weather is definitely beyond our control and should be taken into consideration. I'd bring up MLK's Monday holiday as a point too.

24 hours? If that's at Rio, that is the strictest due date penalty I've ever heard of.

If all else fails, smoke that final!

I didn't explain anything to him, just because when he gave me my grades, he said that he's got a very strict policy and he simply cannot make any exceptions. So I didn't bother, and now I feel like too much time has passed.

Yeah, I was surprised by the late policy. If it's turned in within 24 hours, you get 1/2 credit. Any more than 24 hours late, you get no credit at all. I don't know if that's the policy for all the science classes, or if it's this particular instructor (who I otherwise really like).

I might just attempt getting that 95 on the final!

Who is your instructor? I have Art Fenster. I have been told the same thing. No credit after 24 hours. I don't remember being told that in Bio 201 but I didn't turn in anything late. But I do remember having a lab that was about 1 week late in chem and only losing a couple of points.

Oh my gosh Klone, I soooo feel for you! WOW! I think I had that Art guy and then dropped to take a later class (thank goodness!!). It is up to the instructor. My BIO 201 teacher would not let it be over five days late or you got a zero. My BIO 202 teacher didn't care when you turned it in as long as it came in!! That rule did not apply to the tests or essays though. It is totally up to them. I honestly have to tell you that I don't even think that my teacher graded my labs. She would just send an email out saying that I had answered all the questions correctly and got 100%. Every time. It was so bizarre, really something you would think alot of people would complain about. But, when you think about it, if you don't do well on the tests at RIO you won't pass anyway because they are worth 60%. So, maybe she thought no big deal if she slacked on the labs. It only matters with the labs when they give you a zero! . I did really well on all the essays and never took advantage of the fact that I thought she was not grading the labs. I did them all thoroughly, but I swear, I did not get 100% on each one. I averaged a 76 on both midterm and final together, but the labs meant very little in my final grade, even though I scored very high on them obviously. They brought my final grade up about three or four points. But I see, that is what you need right now.



Are you sure you calculated right? I found at Rio it was really hard to estimate what you were going to get. What I did was take the estimates of what I would get on both midterm and final...add that up.....divide by two, to get an average between the two. Then I would multiply that average by three (three out of five is 60%). Then, I would take my expected average out of the labs and essays and quizzes and times that by two. Like this:

74 + 74 + 74 + 95 + 95 = total divided by 5. Which would give me my rough percent in the class. I was pretty accurate that way.

Is that how you do it? I know labs are worth 20% and quizzes and essay 10%, but then it gets all too complicated for me!LOL! But, it lets me guess at my grade.


Anyway, I do feel for you. I am sorry your teacher is such a stickler. And, that really makes no sense, because at RIO it is all about the tests. I think as long as you turn in your lab you should get credit. If you fail the tests, well, clearly you did something wrong. Anybody that is in these classes, that is not doing the work, IS going to fail. The material is too extensive not to! But hey, don't sweat it too much. Are you keeping all A's for a reason or just because you will not let yourself get a B??? Remember, life comes with unexpected suprises............

Hey Thashej! How did you end up doing on the class? I've thought of you often over the last couple months!

Yes, I'm pretty sure I've figured out the average correctly. I've gotten low 90s on the two take-homes, and about 95 average on the essays. The labs were averaging around 95, but that digestive system assigment was HUGE (210 points out of about 1400 total). So losing those 210 points brought my 95 average down to around 80.

No huge pressing reason I wanted to get an A, just that I saw it was within m reach based on my grades thus far. It won't be a big deal if I get a B, so I'm trying to content myself with that. Thankfully, my GPA at Rio doesn't transfer to my GPA at Yavapai (4.0), just the fact that I took the class and passed.
