I can give you some information on Birmingham area hospitals. I just graduated last month and start my new job on Monday. I interviewed at several places before making my decision so this info. is current.
UAB new grads starting pay is 18.60 and you have to pay for parking (45.00/month)
St Vincents is 18.10 with free employee parking
Baptist health systems is 18.25 during orientation and then 18.50, I believe they have free parking (not sure)
Childrens hospital is 18.10 and parking is 35.00/month

I chose Brookwood hospital. Pay is 18.10 (they have just signed a pay increase but I am not sure what it is) and they have free parking. One of the things I liked about Brookwood is that they will pay back student loans up to 12,000 dollars. I had less than that so withing two years my student loans will be paid.
Hope this helps.

I am sorry if this is a little off topic, but how long are the preceptorships/ orientation? And do any of the hospitals start new grads in ICU's or ER?

I work at UAB and yes they hire new grads in the ICUs and the ER. UAB has the nurse intern program for new grads. New grads choose 3 or 4 units to work in. They spend a month in each area, then choose where they would like to work. We have one that did the intern program, went through 4 units, and when she chose our unit full time, she got an extra 6 wk orientation. Keep in mind that the time in her internship was considered some orientation, because she worked in the ICUs.

I work at East Al in Auburn/Opelika. New grad pay is 17.51, but there are a lot of incentives, such as the "Gainsharing" program. This is a profit sharing that paid each employee at least $1400 last week. You get more the longer you have been here. There are other incentives as well.

New grads are hired in the ICU...I was one. The orientation can be anywhere from 6 to 16 weeks. After the 16 weeks, if you are not ready, they can place you with another person for an addition 4 weeks. If they think you are not ready at that point, they will allow you to transfer to another unit.

All in all, a nice place to work. I like my unit and my co-workers.

Hi CardioTrans,
Are the internships at UAB paid or unpaid? and if they are paid do you know what the pay rate is? What other info can you tell me about the internships at UAB?

Jason

Hey there..... The internships are paid. They work on a temporary license right after graduation until they take boards. I think that now you have to do 6 units... with only 2 of them being a critical care area., the other 4 are floors.

The pay rate is the same for all of the new grads... I think it is $19.85........ then you have the shift diff, plus all of the full time benefits. Every nurse that I know of who has went through it has loved the experience. They are able to see different areas of the hospital and how differently each area is run...not to mention the different leadership types as well as different personalities of people.

You can go to www.uab.edu

Click on Job Openings on the left side.... Hospital Employment.... then choose Nursing, RN, then Intern........ I know they have a good bit of interns starting all at one time in June and January. They also have meetings from time to time with all of the interns to see how things are going and so that the new grad can voice concerns/issues.

Hope this helped. Good luck!!!
