Question jeff state admission ?s about g.p.a

Hi All!

I Plan On Applying To Jeff State Nursing Program For Spring '08. I Already Had A B.s. From Uab & Was Pre-nursing For A Time. I Have All My Pre-reqs, But My G.p.a. Is A Bit Below A 2.5. I Know Jeff State Is On A Point System & I Have To Take The Compass Reading Test. I Don't Have Any Classes Left To Take ( I Was Only One Class From Nursing School, That Was Pathophysiology) I Was Just Wondering If Anyone Has The Same Or Similiar Problem?

Any Help Will Be Greatly Appreciated!

How long has it been since you were in school at UAB? I believe if its been 10 yrs or longer they drop your GPA. At least they did with me but I had been out longer than 10 yrs. I started freash with my GPA with my 3 science classes I needed to take. They do go by a point system and its based on BIO 103, BIO 201, Bio 202, Bio 220 plus the reading compass and math. If you hvae a upper level math it counts twice with your points! You wont need patho at Jeff State. Just need A&p 1 and 2 and Micro.

Good Luck

Re: jeff state admission ?s about g.p.a

I GRADUATED IN 2004, SO I'M PRETTY SURE EVERYTHING WILL COUNT. I KNOW I DON'T NEED PATHO, JUST SAYING THAT'S THE ONLY CLASS I AM LACKING FROM APPLYING TO UAB'S NURSING PROGRAM. AS FAR AS MY MATH I DIDN'T HAVE TO TAKE A MUCH UPPER LEVEL COURSES, ALGEBRA (MADE A D, BUT AT THE TIME UAB CHANGED THE POLICY & ALLOWED A D FOR THAT CLASS TO BE PASSING, SO I DIDN'T HAVE TO RETAKE IT), I ALSO TOOK FINITE MATH(C). I HAVE BEEN COMMUNICATING W/AN ADVISOR @ THE BIRMINGHAM CAMPUS, SO FAR I HAVEN'T GOTTEN ANY FEEDBACK ON MY TRANSCRIPT. HOWEVER, I ALSO TOOK INTRO TO STATISTICS (UAB'S MA 180 & MADE A B), SO HOPEFULLY I WILL BE OK. I RECENTLY EMAIL THE ADVISOR TO GIVE ME A BREAK DOWN OF THE POINT SYSTEM. I DO HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU, ACCORDING TO THE JEFF STATE'S WEBSITE THEY ONLY REQUIRE YOU TO TAKE THE COMPASS READING TEST/ OR HAVE AN ACT READING SCORE OF 17 OR HIGHER. I READ YOU TOOK BOTH THE MATH & READING WAS THAT B/C YOU HAD BEEN OUT OF SCHOOL FOR SO LONG?

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR INSIGHT!!

I did not take the Math test. They use your Math class either MTH116 or MTH100 or higher to determine your points.

Here's the breakdown:

Selected Coursework ( 90 points )

CAT 1: you can use either BIO 103, BIO 201, Bio 202, Bio 220, HS Biology
A=30 B=20 C=10
CAT 2:you can use either BIO 103, BIO 201, Bio 202,MTH 100 or higher, HS Algebra 2
A=30 B=20 C=10
CAT 3:you can use either BIO 103, BIO 201, Bio 202,College Chemistry, HS Chemistry
A=30 B=20 C=10

Math coursework( 11 points)
MTH 100 or higher
MTH 116
MTH 100 or Higher: A or B = 11 C=5
MTH 116: A=11 B=5 C=0

Compass Reading ( 99 points )

Possible 200 points can be earned

I had 188 points. I had an A in BIO 201( 30 points ) A in BIO 202( 30 points ) B in BIO220 (20 points ) in MTH100 ( 11 points ) and I had a 97 on my Compass...thats how I had 188.

The cut off for Fall was 180. That will help you know how many points you need to get.

Hope this helps

Even though they don't use your GPA when you have been out of school that long do the courses you took then still count towards the point system?

I graduated from uab in 2004, so my g.p.a. does count. however, not all classes are good for 10 years. some classes must be within 5 years, i.e. microbiology ( some of the biology courses), but just double check with an advisor. To answer your question yes classes will count if they are within the specific time frame they allow.

Re: jeff state admission ?s about g.p.a

Hi Gelwax,
I am a graduate of UAB too (03). I am trying to get into Jeff States part-time RN program. It is unfair that they coin it as a "professional" program but they give no point or otherwise recognition for those who already hold a Bachelors degree. The point system is a unfortunate reality! As far as getting your transcripts evaluated and attention from advisers etc at Jeff State, it has been my experience that you have to basically do the work for them. Be persistent and show up in person on days that the nursing adviser is there. It took me months to get them to evaluate my transcript from UAB and I had to fuss with them on simple classes such as counting my speech pre-req. I would go back to UAB for the accelerated BSN in a heartbeat if it were doable at night and did not cost so much! Good Luck!
