Calhoun LPN Reading?

When I registered, the advisor mentioned that there might be some assigned reading before the first day. Now I have my text books, and my syllabus whihc scares me and might as well be written in a foreign language.

Does anyone have any advice on how I should know which of my ten books to take with me? Or how to find out if there is assigned reading? I'm starting the LPN program at Calhoun on Monday.

Re: Calhoun LPN Reading?

I don't know about the LPN program, but for the RN program the reading assignments are in the syllabus. For the RN program, most students took all of their books to class regardless of use.

Re: Calhoun LPN Reading?

I hope you have started your reading. It was quite a big assignment.

Not only was reading assigned but we had to register at ERI and do the coaching material for Reach for an A. With the coaching material we have to write out notes. They cannot be typed.

I plan on taking the fundamentals book and the assessment book. Maybe the cyclopedia but I am not sure.

Re: Calhoun LPN Reading?

I was in your shoes 1 year ago, we start our second year tomorrow. First off, if you ever have any questions, feel free to send me a message, i'll even give you my email, because i know how you feel, I was so nervous when we first started and would have loved to know someone that had been in my shoes. With that said, our reading was posted a week before we started, and I too did the reach for an A, you listen and write on the notes.

As far as what books to bring, I had my potter and perry taken apart at kinkos and three holed punched, then i only carried the chapter i needed for that days lecture in a 1 in 3 ring binder, I loved not having to haul my books around...Our med-surg book for 2nd semester was also HUGE, and i had that de-bound also. But really, i hardley ever looked at my books during class, I brought my laptop and copied and pasted the lecture from the website into word, and then added my notes during class, and went home and printed them out...some teachers talk way to fast for me to keep up w/writing.

And if it makes you feel any better, 1st semester was really not that tough, the people who failed out were ones who realized it wasnt for them after experiencing clinicals or those who just were there for the wrong reasons, or didnt come to class, ect. It's 2nd semester that will kick your butt.

But I still LOVE calhoun's program, and still get excited about starting back each semester (we start back tomorrow) so good look in your journey!

Re: Calhoun LPN Reading?

I wouldn't freak out about trying to bring ALL your books to class every day. There's simply no need to bring them all. If in doubt, during the first semester, I would bring Fundamentals of Nursing by Potter and Perry. (I'm assuming it's same book from last year.) Other than that, you can usually look at the calendar and syllabus to tell. In time, believe me, some of the stress will subside and this won't necessarily seem like such a big deal. Hang in there! PM me if you have any other questions.

Btw, I have to disagree with Jamie, lol - I do think the first semester last year was kinda tough, if only because of the stress factor of everything being so new. But I also agree that it was nothing at all compared to the second semester!
