Is there any chance at all for canadian nurses to work in UK? Someone mentioned something about a "freeze", what exactly does that mean?

There is a job freeze on nursing in some areas of the UK at the moment
so it is difficult for even UK nurses to get jobs.

Before you would even be considered you would need to meet the requirements of the NMC to gain UK registration, you would need to find a hospital that would be prepared to support a work visa and this is very unlikely.

As employers all UK hospitals are required to appoint from the UK first and then the EU. Only if there are no suitable applicitants from here are we permitted to look outside the EU. This is generally in areas of management or NICU or other specialised areas.

It is unlikely in the current climate that you would be successful in getting work as a nurse

Someone asked me the other day if Canadians get preference because it's a Commonwealth country? I don't know the answer to that one.Do you?

I don't think so Susan, Canada is not part of the European union and it is only these countries that get priority with employment

It's really sad when our own students can't find jobs when they qualify.

Thats horrible. I thought there was a shortage of nurses the world over!
And it sux for me too. Im studying in Australia (being Australian) but am about to marry a Pom and was hoping to be able to move over there sometime in the near future. Obviously i will want to do my grad year over here, but...yeah.. So the best bet is to stay over here and specialise first.. then try?
Ho hum... plans change again. I wonder if my uni is somehow making my life difficult to develop my adaptability??
Does it look like the freeze will lift at all in the next few years?

Marrying a Brit will make it a bit easier for you but a lot will depend on where you want to live and work. There may be jobs in certain cities due to the high cost of living, plus experience in certain areas may help. Who knows if things will change in the future, I can't see it happening too quickly
