Re: UK old nurses question

You sure you don't mean Kaolin Poultice??

Ichtopaste (or however you spell it) was (& is) used on leg ulcers but I don't ever remember using it for IV sites.

However, I still use kaolin even now for red IV sites - works a treat! you warm it up in boiling water then cut the clear plastic away, leaving the brown, sticky, slightly menthol smelling poultice & the foil in situ. Makes the younger nurses laugh but I wipe the smiles off their faces when they see how well it works!

Oh I remember the burned fingers from making Kaolin poultices! First you have several squares of gauze then you had to aim the boiling kaolin into the middle ,away from the edges then you had to put several more squares on top of that without letting the kaolin come out the sides. It was great practice for pastry making in years to come!

It kept me up wondering as well, I really am sure it was glicanic, it was like a paste.

I remember it as a brown liquid in a bottle and soaking gauze swabs
