Question Race relations and nursing enviroments

I have been told by a rumour that there are racial tensions between the black and white nurses and that the black nurses were forced to leave some hospitals due to the hostile conditions. Is there any truth to this and how are the racial relations in your area in regards to the hospital/healthcare working environment?

I haven't really seen a problem with race where I work. However there is a cultural problem...people from different cultures and countries sometimes run on a more casual time clock than Americans. We do have several employees who consistently clock in 1/2-1 hour late each and every day. Makes for a big problem, but they just don't see it.

Management has tried to work with these folks, but they keep saying "But in my country we do it this way..."

Not everyone from these countries are like that. Some adapt better than others.

I would second that. We also have a contingent of late arrivers who cause problems (and it seems to be a cultural thing), but I haven't seen any racial issues. I work in a VERY diverse center, so the white nurses are actually in the minority. Never had a problem.

I live and work in a area where the ethic minorities are certainly the minority.

To the point that when the phillopino nurses were employed to address staffing problems, one of the biggest concerns was how the town was going to react to such an influx at one time (the was 25 of them).

I dont know why I was worried they were met with open arms by the local community, featuring in the local papers for weeks.

The was the occasional hiccup, mostly with language, the adaptation from the English they learnt to the English we speak, the colloquialisms we use, we finished up employing a local teacher to put some rough edges back on, thier english was too good!

So I suppose that in the UK as I had experienced when I lived there long ago that people are judged by the content of their character rather than the content of melanin.

Here in VA, nurses do not have very much agro in the work place because a nurse is a nurse. Either you are a good one, or a lazy one and there is such a shortage and the pay is dismal that they accept any and everyone.

Since I plan to relocate after I finish my RN diploma by 2007, I was hoping that the UK is as tolerant and accepting of people of different races and cultures as I had remembered.

I plan to move up North to the Yorkshire area (outside the city area) due to the cost of living. I hope they are friendly up there.

We are very friendly up here

In all my yrs in nursing I have never come across any racial problems and like on of the previous posts mentioned re Phillopino nurses they were welcomed with open arms.

Worked + lived all over my lovely country myself and strangely, the only racist behaviour I ever encountered was when I was in London working with lots of foreign nurses taunting each other

I loved the diversity myself .
