Information on UK Nursing

I am currently nursing in Australia and am looking at doing some travel nursing in the UK and was after some information from any one who had some experience in working in the UK or with the travel nursing companies of the UK.

I am after information like rate of pay for nurses?, cost of living in the UK?, good places to work?, good companies to work for?

Basically i just want what ever information you can give me

Thanks Sunny

For a start you need to complete NMC requirements for overseas nurses. Unless you have a EU passport very hard at the moment to get a work permit unless you have experience in an area that is currently on the shortage list. Rates of pay will add a link at the end. Cost of living depends where in the UK you are, the further south you are the more expensive it can be. Will add a link to a couple of supermarkets so you can check out prices on food. Petrol is expensive at the moment (not sure if it comes into the equation but currently just over £1 a litre. Will also add link to NHS jobs so you can have a look at pay and what is available but you will find most say they will not assist with work permit. Also added link so you can check house rental prices out

Re: Information on UK Nursing

Theres no such thing as travel nursing in the UK like there is in the US. you either work for the NHS or a private hospital. Or there are some nursing agencies who give you work at short notice if anyone needs the staff. They call them registry nurses over here in the US.

Re: Information on UK Nursing

I am currently nursing in Canada and have been doing some research on line regarding UK nursing. I received an email from Martin Bowler, registration officer overseas administration team at the nursing and midwifery council stating that I would have to write an international english language testing system (IELTS) prior to receiving an application package. It is only offered in Canada in Feb and March. I am english speaking obviously but still require to complete it. That is as far as I got. If you do receive information on places to live? pay? working environment? I am interested as well.

Thanks,

mjcan

I don't know where you live in Canada but, I live in Ontario. Conestoga College offers IELTS throughout the year. I haven't yet applied to take the test (waiting for winter to be over, don't want to travel through a snow storm). This is just the first step to getting to the UK. The test sites are offered in Toronto and Kitchener. Google search "Conestoga College + IELTS" you'll find info there.

What's about the Common Wealth? I thought because of the CW an Australian citizen could come to the UK without any problems respectively would get a Visum anyway. Am I wrong?

Not sure about CW, but doesn't make it any easier for UK nurses to go to Australia. Still have to apply for a visa and have more success if it is a requirement on the shortage list for Australia. Some get penalised on age if over 45 on certain visas

while it may be eaiser for peopel from some commonwealth countrites to get toursit visas or not need tourist visas it doesn't change the situation over work permits etc ... hence the recent stuff in the Uk press aobut the way in which the Uk is shutting out routes for Indian and Pakistani doctors to come to the UK to undertake specialist training ..

1. becasue of the expansion of Uk medical school places

2. becasue EU doctors can come and work in the UK without work permits as long as their registration is acceptable to the GMC

point 2 applies to Nurses just substitute NMC
