Applied for Sep08 course - now what?

Hi all,

So i'm on my way to studying from September 08.... what should I do now? ideally, i'd like to get a job in a hospital or care home, something loosely connected to nursing or working alongside nurses - does that sound the right thing to do? I would ideally be lookin for 3 days a week.

Would anyone have an idea of who employs the carers and auxiliaries in a local hospital> I think my local area is East and North Herts, if thats helpful.

Thanks in advance

T xx

If you nip into the local hospital and check out the job advert boards there maybe something, also see what agency they use and approach them for work. Many join the local agency as students so they can still work on holiday times or occasional weekend whilst studying

Hi Temperence, we have quite a few health care support workers who are awaiting their university start dates, they have all said what a benefit it has been during thier training as well.

If you contact your local hospital's HR / recruitment they will be able to tell you how they go about recruiting their HCA's. My hospital does mass interviews then places the successful applicants where there are vacancies. THose that don't get a perminant post are offered bank nurse after a short orientation.

I think the NHS also has an on-line job search website you could check out. i think it would be a good idea but bear in mind that what they teach in uni may not exactly be what you see on the floor ;-)

We used to have great fun as "seasoned auxilliares" teaching our fellow students how to 'really' make a bed!

my daughter worked in a nursing home before she went nursing and at least it gave her the chance to know what it felt like to touch and clean a patient. something student nurses dont get to do a lot of.
