That is really low pay for an educated professional, especially in a field where demand is high. Does every hospital in that area pay so low? CNAs make close to that amount of money. If your hospital has a union, nurses should negotiate for more money!! We have to work hard, long hours, and peoples' lives and well-beings count on us. That kind of pay does not reflect a nurse's skills, education, or comittment.

Southeastern IL, the hospital I started at, base pay for new grads was 14.77 an hour, $1 for shift differential for nights 7p-7a. Got a whooping $.34 cent raise after 6 months! Moving to the Springfield IL area right now and got offered about $3.00 more an hour for evenings 3p-11p on a Cardiac Rehab unit.

What you make definately depends on where your live and the cost of living. But the first hospital I told ya about was the lowest paying hospital in that area. You could drive 30-40 minutes in any direction and make about $3-4 more an hour depending on experience.

Just depends on what we're willing to put up with I guess, and as long as people continue to work there (non-union also) they will never change their pay scale. There were charge nurses where I worked before who had been there YEARS and I know probably only made $1-2 more an hour than I did as a new grad. How sad!

Not in Atlanta....I'm in San Diego.

Ours is $26-$29/hr to start depending on the hospital and if you are a BSN or ADN graduate. Night shift has a $4 differential, I only know of one hospital who offers a $2 weekend differential as well.

So, they're paying the BSN grads more than the ADN grads? Is there much of a difference in pay?

Some hospitals don't have a difference in pay, at a few others it's 2 or 3% more for BSN and 5-6% more for MSN.

Well we have a postpartum nurse in my unit whose badge says MSN on it, I have seen a few others on differet floors that are also MSNs. A few of our instructors also worked per diem at the bedside and had their MSN. So there are out there.

Not every MSN nurse wants to completely give up bedside nursing (especially the ones who teach) because they don't want to lose their skills.
