I'm researching the Chain of Command within the hospital structure for a specialty-based CNS (I'm Critical Care). Please share who you answer to, whether they are supportive of your efforts, and how effective overall your Chain of Command is. I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks! Nursemouse.

I am an cns in oncology and our chain of command is a weird one: we are temporarely (2 years already) under command of ward manager, and this mix of being 'under command' and having the manager as a client isn't recommended. Get yourself as high to the hospital management as you can get. You need to be independent from the ward to do your work as an cns properly. (sorry, english is not my native language)

Our 351 bed hospital currently has 3 CNS positions. We all report to the director of education which can be strange at times as we are assigned specialty areas and work closely with the directors of the service line.
