I am 95% certain I have otitis media. I'll call for an appt. as soon as the doc's office opens at 8:30. The problem is that I'm supposed to fly to DC on Wednesday for a conference. I know from previous experience that if I start meds this morning, I'm not going to be cleared to fly in 48 hours.

I know I will have to negotiate this with work, but I'm soliciting opinions here. Should I offer to pay for the whole ticket ($434, if that makes a difference in your reasoning), half of it, or none of it and just wait to see what they say?

I don't think we have a policy addressing this situation, siri. Now that you mention it, though, I guess before I open this can of worms, I should give HR a call and find out if I have any protections- it will be good to know that going in.

Hope it works out that policy states you are not required to pay the ticket since this is illness-related.

If you are not allowed to travel due to unavoidable medical reasons, I don't believe you should reimburse the hospital for the ticket or the conference. Illness is a fact of life, and yours will be documented by a physician's note. If you cancelled for personal reasons, that would be different.

I would encourage your hospital to contact the travel agent or airline to see whether a special exception can be made to re-issue the ticket in another staff member's name, and contact the conference committee to see if they would allow a substitute to attend the conference.
