Hi, I have a boyfriend that is graduating form nursing school this June and I don't know what to get him. (I, myself will also go to nursing school this fall, yeah!) I would like to get him something he can use when he starts working, what are some essential things every nurse should have?

I just graduated a couple of weeks ago. When family & friends asked what I wanted/needed I asked for medium sized scrubs. Buying a whole new wardrobe in scrubs can get pretty pricey. I got a lot of very nice and cute scrub sets. With each set I wear, I will remember the person that got them for me.

Also, bandage scissors, hemastats, pen lights, watches, lanyards make nice gifts too.

well if you are looking for a pricey item a nice stethescope would be great if he has a cheapie. (it will run 120-250 dollars though for a good one). Also if he has a pda ask him or check to see if he could use new software.

Ditto on the scrubs idea (if his hospital doesnt supply them). Comfy shoes are nice, too.

If he is religious at all and wears jewelry, a medal of St. Catherine of Siena is a nice gift, too- she is the patron Saint of nurses.

I agree with the stethoscope idea. That's what my family got me. I found a Cardio II online for $170, and I LOVE it! (and get it engraved for him...that would be special!)

I like the personalized, good stethoscope recommendation - as for scrubs - not so much - he's a straight guy that doesn't need 14 pairs of "cute" scrubs, right? (No offense to guys that aren't straight and/or like "cute" scrubs.)
However, if you want to buy him something that he will absolutely love - get the man some good shoes, because you can make do without an expensive stethoscope, and you don't have to have a complete wardrobe of scrubs... but if your feet are hurting halfway into a twelve hour shift, you're going to be hatin' it.

I know that new shoes are going to be my graduation present to myself!

Those are all great ideas. If he finished school, he probably has a stethoscope. Good shoes or solid color scrubs. Can't go wrong with either.

Buy him a PDA, and let him load up some of the free software from ePocrates and MerckMedicus - it will be a GREAT help to him when he starts - especially if he goes to acute care. That's what my wife gave me - and it was a great idea (it's still hard to find ANY gifts for men in nursing LOL). She invested less than 200.00 in the whole thing.

If you're buying a stethescope, make sure that where ever he works allows him to bring one. Our facility - at least in the NICU and PICU - keeps a quality stethescope in each patient room that is sterilized after each use, to prevent patient to patient contamination. I bought a brand new Littman and have yet to use it there. May sound silly, but just FYI...
