That's a great idea. I too have tatoos, but no one would ever know because they are all conceiled,

I hope this will not be a problem at my nursing school, wherever I go. Actually this is the first time that I've heard of a school being so harsh on wearing jewelry.
Actually, there are very good reasons for not wearing your engagement ring to clinicals. Think about sterile gloving and having your stone tear it..oops!! Or getting it caught when you're making beds. And how would you feel if you were taking care of someone elderly and accidentally ripped their skin with your ring??

I remember what it's like to be newlywed (although it was EONS ago..hehe)...maybe you could buy a plain band to wear to clinical??

To the OP...while *some* may think tats are ok, there are still MANY that don't. Personally, I just don't think they look professional. But hey!! I also starch and iron my uniforms

JMHO, but I can't imagine liking a tattoo 20 years from now...heck, I don't even like the china I picked out 20 years ago.

LOL, I always thought that also, so I waited until I was 40 to get one, the same thing I had envisioned since I was young (small heart, right hip). Got my 2nd one at 45, medium sun, upper left back. I am now in nursing school but neither of mine will show. Think I will have the heart redone on my 50th b'day to include my grandkids names. No piercings, 'cept one hole in each ear, let the other 2 holes grow shut when the grandbabies decided to tug at them.

Tatoos and Hep C

I'm surprised in all this discussion, that no one mentioned Hepatitis C. Fairly common around here with tatoos.

Probably becuase most of us - if not all, went to someplace clean and reputable.

I've got 4 tattoos, none of them inapropriate, and I'm training to be a CNA at a facility where you're aloud to show them - one of the CNA's, i was told, as two full arm sleaves, and no one has a problem with it.

I have three tattoos. One on my lower back, one on my right calf, and one on my left ankle. I don't have any that would show in a normal pair of scrubs. I think the policy around here is "no visible tattoos" but if that weren't in place, I certainly wouldn't think differently of a co-worker who had visible tattoos. As long as they're good and safe at what they do, I couldn't care less what decorations they have on them.

I have made up my mind-

Thanks everyone- I know I didn't pose this quesiton but now I have made up my mind- WHEN I graduate from nursing school in Aug 2006- A tat will be a gift to myself. I am 38 and I have wanted one all of my life but for other professional jobs and FEAR I never got one. But as long as I can keep it hidden (on my ankle) I think I can finally get my small Mickey Mouse on my ankle (now to convince my DH!!!)
BTW-They are strict about our dress and hair and such at our school but they haven't said a word about tats or for that matter piercings. I can't pull off piercing though- I am a klutz! I have had my earings torn through too many times by kids in daycare so I am really cautious with earings.

Hello,
I think tattoos and excessive piercings look unprofessional for anyone. If people are going to have tattoos and try to appear professional at work, they should be wear clothing should cover them up. It is your right to have tattoos, but it is also someones right when hiring you to not hire you based on them. Have you ever seen an elderly man that had tons of tattoos on their skin as they have aged, they no longer look so cool! Also there are issues with people having MRI's and tattooed skin. Something to think about.
