I most certaintly agree poor management from ADMIN. all the way down to the Nurses! That does rreflect on Scheduling, origanizalation of Supplies , work/pt. load, non-professional behaviors, laziness! I was taught by my Mom "There is a place and time for every thing." "put things back in same place and you will not have to waste time looking for it and work to completion --always do the best you can. When work is done then you can go play! That is how I work at home and on my job.Iget stressed out over the BIG MESSES left at nurses station and med. rooms, [ I work on 3 halls ] Med carts not stocked, not to mention the mess they are in no one ordered supplies ,meds and the filing system is not a SYSTEM! The unit sectarys say they do not have time to keep it and Isee their job is very stressfull and I also see some not all goofing around. Ispend a lot of time looking for Tx. supplies , paper supplies, ect. Yes I get upset at times cause I have someone with an acute change in cond. and I have to run to other halls to find the paper work to transfer the pt to ER. And when you are training a new nurse it is embarressing in regards to the above .

Management can really make or break a work atmosphere. Managers need to take time to really get to know what is going on on the floors and be able to staff well enough and ensure that there is a good team atmosphere at work. I think nurses NEED to work as teams on floors or things get really ugly. I left my last job due to poor management. This manager was the epitome of bad. She sat in her office all day...frequently was gone by noon...and then made really bad decisions with staffing. She ended up basically being asked to leave about 6 months after I left but not before she ruined what had been a great team/place to work. She knew how to talk the corporate talk but couldn't walk the walk with staff. It really burns me up that such ignorant lazy people are allowed to manage and have that much control over those who are in the trenches day in and day out trying their hardest only to get smacked in the face and have very little recourse. I mean it seems like managers cause more trouble than they are worth. And if you get on a managers "bad side" they can make your life hell and there isn't much you can do. It just burns me up that they can have that much control over such a big aspect of your life as work. I say first thing we do.....kill all the managers.

Hello Bluenurse......Well I would not go that far as to "kill all the managers"......Tho it did make me laugh!.....I Understood what you meant by it. Bluenurse I work LTC 11-7 shift most of the time only with one other Nurse who has one hall ...skilled... and I have three halls..two med passes on each hall plus PRN's of meds and TX's.....THE "24 hour MD orders" to check off along with Med updates on the three halls....and whatever else that may happen acutlely with the residents. The other nurse and I are so busy ...we help each other when we can we are a good team.I am also the supervisor and have all those duties to carry out. There is approx.200 or more residents 48 to54 per hall. Do not take this as complaining ...just explaining!....The stress comes from the things that are suppose to be done..example ..MD orders....unit sectary and nurse on 7-3 are to take orders off..... well I have picked up on a pattern of much to often some are....some are not ....but signed by nurse. ....Med updates signed by nurse but not checked for Meds and Tx's .....ect. that have been changed or DC. It seems that it is the little things all added together that makes the simple tasks harder. Some nurses admit to just signing at times cause they do not have time.........There are others but this is getting too long!.........HEY...we all make mistakes and I do not want to come across as if to imply I'm perfect....I'm not!!!.....But GEE..where is their conscience!!!! If I complain Professionally It is taken personally and Management is not doing anything! I do not involve them unless needful. Thanks for this forum we can get rid of some stress!!!!!! I am blessed to be a Nurse......I love Nursing.....but do not like /approve of a lot of things that goes on ..on the sidelines! I work hard to make 11-7 shift a good shift to work......for CNA's and nurses......We are a small group/team and if the morle gets low.....Well here comes that word again!!!.....Our 'STRESS"gets out of control. Good-night....God bless....................Bubble

MONEY! Money rules the administrators. They don't seem to realize tho that "saving" money by cutting staffing to the bone only hurts their bottom line in the end. Unhappy staff = more turnover = more orientation costs = stressed out staff = unhappy customers = less customers/patients! Spirals downhill all the way.
I once offerred to have our CFO ( chief financial officer ) shadow me step by step for even one 12hr shift! That would shake a nickel or two from his Christmas Bonus! :

You have to keep going up the chain of control.
Above the Administrators in LTC, it's the "MANAGEMENT COMPANIES". they control the monies and the census, then what about state and federal funding. And wait: What about the insurance companies?

Sorry I may be out of line. I hate politics. I want to be a Nurse again.

Sorry: again I've had to much coffee

Hey Bubble,

You guys do a great job. I don't know what I would do without my midnight staff!!! I'v had to go in many nights and help. I wouldn't have known where to start if ist wasn't for the Nurses and CNAs.

Sounds like your DON needs to make a night visit armed with coffee, doungnuts and HUGGs for every one. Tell your team from me they are appreciated ! !

I came into the posession of a Wall Mart application 5 yrs. ago in my first DON job. I keep it with me and look at it when I'm stressed and recite the words over and over, "Welcome to wall mart, would you like a buggy?"

You see I want to stay in practice.
