Question pay

i work in an inner city er. We had a plan called the "weekend" plan, in which two of our nurses signed up last year, and agreed to work every weekend for one year, with special compensation. I don't know how much exactly. The "plan" expired at the end of October. The nurses negotiated with our manager and with the DON for a new hourly rate. The nurses were not thrilled, but are still working with us. Yesterday, the 2 nurses were called to human resources, and told that "someone" had complained about the amount of money these two were making, and therefore, both nurses were going to have to take a big cut (I am sure it is about $10 per hour), and have to take the "standard" rate of $21/hr. My question is, can they do this? I don't know if the nurses have a written contract. They alread had received at least 2 paychecks with the agreed upon amount. Both are now looking for new jobs. We also suspect that there is no "someone" that complained, but rather administration is cutting nurses, and ancillary personnel at lightening speed here. We are going to end up losing 2 nurses with approx. 30 years experience, and have them replaced with new grads making $17.50/hr. I am sure this is what administration wants in the first place. Any suggestion?

Without a contract you are an eployee at will, in which case the employer can take virtually any action with regard to conditions of employment. Suggestions are either get a contract or begin looking for a more ethical facility.

Is there such a thing as an ethical facility anymore?
