Brass...I am an LPN in LTC and I can do pretty much what the RN does...the only thing that i can think of that I cannot do is place an IV, and that is very few and fare between us needing an IV. I pass meds, I'm in charge of my hall and my aides, I can hang an IV bag and piggybacks, I give injections, I can do IV push (once I'm signed off by the facility).

Oh yeahthe only thing I can't do that the RN's can do, is collect their pay rate! LOL

If you are questioned as to what you are able to do by an RN, first don't take it personally. RN's ask other RN's what they can and cannot do too. Nursing has become very complex and technical. It is really a very legitimate question and hopefully being asked in an effort not to overwhelm you with your assignment. You might ask your supervising nurse to go over your job description for that unit and check off the skills you have mastered. Identify the skills which you may need to brush up on and those which you may have never done. In my 26yrs. I am still coming across things which I have never done or forgotten about. Hope this helps!

TO SAY THE LEAST EACH HOSPITAL HAVE POLICY AND PROCEDURE IN PLACE AND KNOWING WHAT YOU ARE SUPPOSE TO DO AND YOUR COWORKER HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED IN THAT FORMAT,ALTHOUGH JOB DESCRIBTION DO SPECIFY YOUR JOB DUTIES AND KNOWING WHAT YOUR TEAM CAN DO IS VERY IMPORTANT, AND WHEN YOU ARE WORKING IN A SETTING SUCH AS LONGTERM CARE PSCYH HOSPITAL EVERYBODY KNOW WHAT THEY SUPPOSE TO DO TRUE THERE ARE DIFF LEVELS OF NURSING BUT COME ON IT IS NOT MED/SURG OR ICU FOR THAT MATTER.
IT DONT TAKE A ROCKET SCIENTIST TO FIGURE THAT OUT. THANKS FOR READING BRASS7229
