I don't think anyone that posted here (me for sure) really lies awake at night thinking deeply about the issue of chest hair. I know I may have stated that it bugs me in a way that would lead one to think that...but mainly it was an exaggeration. It bugs me mildly but not THAT bad. It' s meant to be more of a humourous light topic...no one is putting it up there with issues that plague the nursing profession today or anything (I don't think we are anyway). I personally think this is a very funny thread and we need to keep it that way. We don't laugh enough in the world today.

Every time I check my e-mail and see a post for this thread, I can't help but laugh as I link to this site . This thread is one of the funniest ones I've seen. I look forward to hearing the replies

As long as the guy is wearing a regular scrub top--not one with a "cutesy" print--that's a bit jarring!!!

and as long as the man is NOT wearing a gold medallion...we used to have a Dr. that did that and he also insisted that all the nurses call him "Nick" (his first name) and he used to call me "angel" (ewww...full body shiver). I guess when I think of male chest hair and scrub tops I think of that icky Dr. We used to call him "Dr. Feelgood" (behind his back of course)...he totally reminded me of a character out of a cheesy 70's adult movie. Ewwww.....So chest hair is not to bad....but please not in combo with thick gold chains with medalions and/or fanny packs (unless you work in a place fanny packs are convenient) This Dr. really didn't need one. (And no he wasn't a diabetic or had any life threating allergy that warrented a fanny pack)

I voted against the T-shirt.

I don't wear a T-shirt because it is too d--- hot. I definitely wouldn't wear a turtleneck!!!! They say that men don't go through menopause, but I get some pretty good hot flashes (I'm 52). I guess it comes from working so long with women--I have been an OB nurse for 12 years now, but I got hot flashes in Nursing school back in 1986.

Talk to the scrub makers and have them make round necks instead of V. I know of an MD who wears scrubs backwards, so no one will peek (AS IF!!!). I notice that zippered and buttoned tops are a thing of the past. I do agree with the manscaping if you are extra hairy, but I also don't intend on shaving my arms, especially when I have worked with women with much hairier arms than mine.

Then there is the colors of scrubs I get stuck with sometimes!!

Facial jewelry, fingernails from hell (male and female), beards/chin hairs (male and female), mustaches (male and female), long hair hainging in your work (male and famale), camel toes, body/mouth odor (male and female) and visible cracks (butt or clevage) can all be distracting, offensive and unprofessional. What can we pick on next? You are bound to offend someone eventually.

On one hand waaay to funny on the other, way to serious. I was pleased to see someone posted how the media and fashion industries have reshaped the image of the all american woman into a thin, anorexic, prepubescent "sex kitten". Guys TAKE A STAND!!!! Dont let this happen to you. You are right. T shirts are hot and yes they do hang out from your sleeves. In order to get that military look you have to find a good brand that form fits and most times still will need to b e ironed. Who wants that??? If you prefer to cover it up... get a cheap t shirt and cut out a form that will fit in the V neck and sew it in place. (Like a lady's lace panel to hide cleavage). You don't get the verbal crap, you don't get the verbal insults, you don't have to manscape (unless you prefer) and you still maintain YOUR air of professionalism.
I voted no. It is your choice, not mine. I think there are much more important issues to address regarding "attire and appearance". Fake nails for one, long hair dangling in a sterile field, (like foley insertion!) flipping that same hair 40 times a shift.... who does she think she is.... CHER???? Hip hugger scrubs... waist bands that have been rolled over and over and now we get to see the thongs and panties or the bras that are nonexistence and the boobs look like 2 pigs under a blanket fighting to get out.
Chest hair is natural so wear it proudly. Having been a nurse forever and a patient a few times... a few chest hairs have not caused my knees to go weak or gross me out. Tongue rings clicking on the back of teeth... now that has grossed me out!

I worked at a hospital once that wanted to require all personnel in OR...including doctors...to wear panty hose because of the amount of pubic hair on the OR floor!!!! You can just imagine how well THAT went over!!

You know, nobody brought up the 'barber' looking shirts as an alternative. The guys had to wear these in nursing school (with the collar and the zipper down the middle). I know a male nurse that wears those (he's older, and it seems to suit him- maybe it's for this reason ).

I'm such a simpleton- every post makes me crack up (At first, I wasn't sure WHOSE pubic hairs you were referring to).
