Re: How often do you take a break?

quote=RNKittyKat]When my blood sugar drops to the 30's or my bladder just can't stand one more minute. According to the rules, even water bottles aren't allowed on the unit. So we dehydrate, blood sugar drops and kidney stones form. Kind of sad.[/quote]

Arggggggg.. not even water bottles allowed on unit ? we have water bottles, snacks. cake , fruit. Tea and coffee is also allowed so long as its past 7pm ( pediatric unit - this rule assumes all children in bed ).

Most shifts I sit with coffee while i do my documentation. Seems alot of rules where you work.

Re: How often do you take a break?

I work in the ED. I have a paid hour lunch break. And I am even able to leave the facility if I want! There is a scheduled float nurse who relieves everyone for lunch. After reading these posts, I realize that I am quite lucky. As far as bathroom breaks, I sometimes have to hold my bladder for longer than I would like, but I try to make it a priority.

Re: How often do you take a break?

Ugh it bothers me when smokers get more breaks than non-smokers! Not that this is their fault, but management should let everyone get the same amount of breaks between smokers and non-smokers. I am not a nurse, but am my job, a bunch of us took "fresh air breaks" instead of ciggerate breaks. They never argued it though. I'm sure it is different in nursing since it is busier I'm sure!

Re: How often do you take a break?

sometime during my 12 hour shift I usually make my way back to the ladies room and sit for 2 minutes...I think that is considered a break, ususally I eat when I chart at the computer.

Thumbs up Re: How often do you take a break?

Well, I work in management and this is exactly one of the reasons I got off the floor! I get to work about 7:15. Take a break about 8:30.Another break about 10:00, 30- 45 minutes for lunch and another break about 2:00 and I go home 3:00-3:30ish.

I don't have to kill myself getting my work done. Very non stressful, I love it.

Re: How often do you take a break?

I've mostly always done nites, and as I don't want to be eating a big meal in the middle of the nite, I take something to snack on.

I now work in LTC, and eat my snack while I chart. Sometimes if it's really slow and quiet, I'll just sit down in the lounge for 10 or 15 minutes.

I've never liked being told that I HAD to take a break at such and such a time like they often do on days - maybe at that particular time I might have my mind around something or other and not want to leave it.
