Re: How long did you stay at your first job out of nursing school?

Year graduated: 1961
First job: Women's surgery and orthopedics in a county hospital
How long: 18 months
Why left: I felt I needed to get some experience in a private hospital. I'd had nearly all my clinicals in that same county hospital.
Orientation: None--I'd been working as a student (we used to do that in those days) on the same unit.
Residency programs? Not in those days.

2006

Long Term Acute Care

Still there (1 year), but now only PRN as of a week ago.

I went PRN due to poor working conditions, high stress & going back to school.

I think the time frame was adequate, 19 weeks (all new grads), but I felt like some of the teaching was not.

No.

What was your first job out of nursing school? RN on a 32 bed Tele floor
How long did you stay there? 11 weeks
Why did you leave? Psycho management, backstabbing co-workers, orientation was cut short, the constant lying, promised days and then forced into nights while people who worked there less time than me got to work whenever, poor staffing (10 patients at night). Being forced into taking step down patients along with 8 or 9 Tele patients...did I mention backstabbing co-workers????
Did you have adequate orientation to your new job? NO
Was there a nursing residency program available? They claimed there was, however 99.9% of the people who did their residency were not hired into that department, they were placed depending on needs of the facility when they graduated
If there was a nursing residency program, how long was it? 12 weeks

Thanks for helping me with this information.
I graduated in 2005 as an LVN.
My first healthcare job involved being a charge nurse at a nursing home.
I remained at this place of employment for 6 weeks.
I left because I lived 28 miles from the workplace, and they offered no benefits.
My orientation was grossly inadequate, since it lasted only 8 hours.
No nursing residency program was available, as this was a small nursing home.

Re: How long did you stay at your first job out of nursing school?

I'd love to help you out, here's my info:

Year Graduated: 2007

First job: charge nurse in a nursing home, I started in March and I am still here at this point and time, though have started applying to other jobs due to high stress, and horrible shift wars between ALL staff...its ridiculous.

Why left: Haven't yet...God help me!

Orientation: Consisted of working 6 12's in a row, 4 of those with another nurse, then being left on my own. Not very helpful

Nurse residency: NO
Length? N/A
