I totally agree on the maggot thing...and I had no idea what they were when I first saw the picture. I just knew gums are NOT supposed to look like THAT!!!!! My in-laws are in peridontal school right now and I have no idea how they could enjoy that. I HATE looking in people's mouths (well, those with nasty teeth) and don't even like looking at my own cavities at the dentist. That picture was way beyond anything I would ever want to come into contact with. God, I'm gonna have nightmares about that one.

I did wonder why people would feel disgusted standing next to that guy, no matter which picture they were shown. Some people naturally have bad skin and it's no reflection on their hygience. Yeah, sure, he looked kinda greasy in that last one, but it wouldn't make me feel disgusted. I didn't enjoy the worm picture either. I don't like worms that come out of people (and animals). I have seen enough worms coming from orifices on both humans and animals to last me a lifetime. Nasty.

Actually the results are in and if proves that "disgust" is an evolutionary protective mechanism operating to protect us from disease.

http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99994563

However they state that our level of disgust falls as we get older as if we are nurses.

Like you I did not realise that those things near the teeth were maggots EEEEWWWWW!!!! To be honest that is the one thing that would make my flesh crawl - If I saw that in real life there would be a people shaped hole in the wall where I would have exited stage left at the speed of light!

Yea--gross, but my only thought was that I could touch all of that as long as I was wearing gloves.

I've seen that maggots in the gums pic before on a pathology site. So, I guess I didn't react strongly to it having seen it before.

The bugs grossed me out more than anything else. I have a major bug phobia.
I will actually dry heave when having to kill a bug in my house. I prefer a purulent wound over a bug any day.
