Travers sings praises of her bone marrow donor

69-year-old Mary Travers -- of the folk group Peter, Paul & Mary fame -- has survived leukemia with the help of a bone marrow transplant from a stranger who it was discovered is poles apart from Travers politically.

Upon meeting the transplant donor, Mary DeWitt Hessen, Travers hugged her and gushed, "From the moment your bone marrow cells went into my body, I knew I was going to be OK." Later, before a sold-out concert, Travers said, "This is a very special woman to whom I owe everything."

Re: Travers sings praises of her bone marrow donor

I have a sample in the National Marrow Donor Program.

3 yrs ago, they thought there was a possible match, and so ran the detailed analysis on my bloodwork.

Unfortunately, not a detailed match, but next time, if the opportunity presents itself, I have a 'detailed' sample from which to work from on file.

I would encourage EVERYONE to be the possible miracle for somebody, someday: Find the collection place near you on their website and give a sample of blood.

Re: Travers sings praises of her bone marrow donor

Thank you Vicki and Timothy.
I too have a donor sample.
Glad to read that it is less painful now. I want to donate if possible but less pain is always better.
Maybe more will be willing now.

Loved their music for years.
