parents over-medicate child to death

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17758170/

The "parents" of this child kept her over medicated so she would be quiet. I truly hope that they are charged and convicted of murder. They don't seem like they 'simple' people the defense is making them out to be. The mother must be quite clever to successfully con the doctor into believing that all 3 children had mental disorders. It doesn't seem like a case of Maunchasen's by proxy; just a case of simple disability fraud. It broke my heart for the little girl.

Re: parents over-medicate child to death

This makes me want to cry. How could they do that to that poor little child? Sometimes I think that during pregnancy every parent-to-be should take parenting classes. I mean, babies cry, toddlers throw tantrums, and teenagers...well, I'm not quite sure what to call it. My mom called it a nightmare. The point is, it is natural and it is a part of life. Meds should not be a way to control otherwise expected behavior. I agree that the parents should be charged. I only wish that the protests of others had been heard before it was too late. I also hope that the siblings are able to recover from the abuse their parents hurled at them.

She was diagnosed with bi-polar and ADHD at the age of 2 1/2!!!!! Not only should the parents be charged but the psychiatrist as well.

Re: parents over-medicate child to death

sad for this little girl

{what is it with these prescriptions for 10 days getting filled just one day after another 10 day prescription? and mother is saying that the pills were lost, or water got into the bottle?}

why was she wearing pull-up diaper at her age?
all the professionals who were involved in this little girl's life couldn't be effective in saving her life?
is/was it a problem with medication supervision?
a problem with parenting?

This is one of the saddest stories I have read. That poor child. I hope more than the parents are held responsible for her death.

As a mother of a 4 year old this breaks my heart. I hope the parents get whats coming to them. She never stood a chance.

Re: parents over-medicate child to death

"According to the medical examiner, Rebecca died of a combination of Clonidine, a blood pressure medication Rebecca had been prescribed for ADHD; Depakote, an antiseizure and mood-stabilizing drug prescribed for the little girl’s bipolar disorder; a cough suppressant; and an antihistamine."

What kind of BP med would be prescribed for ADHD?? I've never heard of this. I certainly wouldn't expect a preschooler to be on HTN meds! Anyone heard of this? Is it common?

The clonidine is the bp med given to kids with ADHD. It has sedating properties. Though I don't think it is considered to be a primary treatment, it does seem to be given fairly often in child psych.

Where is this story that you are reading? I am saddened whenver a child is abused. I wonder what the parents and/or adults are thinking.
