Nurse pulled cop from wrecked car, but police said she stole service weapon

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/l...,4630555.story

A trained nurse, Rachelle Jackson immediately ran toward the sound of the crash. A Chicago police car had collided with another vehicle and was starting to smoke, two officers still inside. Fearing an explosion, she quickly pulled one officer from the passenger side. She never imagined her act of kindness nearly six years ago would land her in jail for more than 10 months on charges that she robbed, battered and disarmed a peace officer.

Jackson filed a lawsuit, and on Thursday a federal jury found against the city and several Chicago police officers, awarding Jackson $7.7 million for false arrest, malicious prosecution, coercive questioning and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

"I'm going to go home and lie down for a little bit," an ecstatic Jackson, 41, said after the verdict. "I feel relieved. I'm happy, and I'm thanking God."

The case began in November 2002, when a car ran a stop sign in Jackson's neighborhood, slamming into the squad car. Jackson was walking nearby and rushed to the scene. When she arrived, the officer behind the wheel was unconscious and the passenger, Officer Kelly Brogan, was dazed.

Typical police behavior. I'll leave it at that.

Hope they have to pay her every penny.

The printed article says she a trained nurse and the video states she's a medical assistant.....so which one is she?

Typical police behavior.
I have to disagree with you there.

We now have, I think a police chief that doesn't side with the police before the facts are known.
Now we need better policies.

Chicago has a record of police committing crimes.
Violence, torture, and lying.

Even my family members who are LAPD tell me of the 'code of silence'

Regarding this woman I think she would have had the gun if she stole it.

Re: Nurse pulled cop from wrecked car, but police said she stole service weapon

Yea, I should clarify. Not all cops are bad. That would be ridiculous. However in certain cities and towards certain populations they are bad. Chicago, LA and New York PD's are known to be horrible and corrupt. Whether it is the cops or the institutions doesn't really matter. Some people of certain demographics never have these problems and of course they are usually the ones that say cops aren't that bad. But they are. Profiling, corruption, murders, use of cops to enforce racial discrimination in the south, cops harassing middle easterners after 9/11, the list goes on. Many Americans don't just say this. I don't just say it. We witness these things on an almost daily basis.

I will say, and I don't want to start a thread or argument over this topic but when I read the headline (not the story) the first thought in my head was 'The nurse is black.' Maybe that wasn't right to think but oh look at my surprise when I saw her picture. Random chance? Not likely. Same with "suspects" that are shot 40-50 times and only have wallets.

This country has a history of inept and crooked policing. The good cops, while greatly appreciated can't overshadow the bad ones. Not until some changes are made.

BTW I get pulled over at least 3 times a week in my neighborhood. Not speeding, no broken tail lights no illegal turns. The question is almost always 'What are you doing in this neighborhood?' I have had the 'You resemble a suspect' line and the there was a 'complaint' about a stolen Smart Car. I mean how many criminals steal Smart Cars... The license plate has my name on it for crying out loud and I am the only one in the neighborhood with one.

As far as I am concerned, cops in general are bad. The onus to prove they are good is on them. I don't give them the benefit of the doubt whatsoever.

BTW - If someone is foolish enough to break into my house they will meet my Glock. Who needs a cop? Just do it Texas style.

i can certainly sympathize with your experiences, stanley.
and, police corruption is alive and well, for sure...
as is their code of silence.

doesn't mean i'm going to view all as evil.
but yeah, definitely...it exists and is rampant in certain areas of our country.

I can't remember an innocent white person killed by police who "thought (s)he had a gun."
I've tries to google and yahoo for it and find incidents oh non whites. And racist rioters retaliating.
If I knew of one such incident I could probably find it.
Do you?
