Re: November 22nd 1963

Yep I turned 17 years old that day. Since I was going to a Catholic high school and we had Mass every Friday. It was during Mass that the principal announced that President Kennedy had been assassinated. We prayed for the repose of his soul, his family and the country, Mass ended, we went to eat lunch and were sent home. Everyone and I mean everyone was in tears. We were all scared and crying wondering what was going to happen to our country now!!!

No I am too young. Mom used to tell us about it every year, she was 8 years old. Told us she would never forget where she was, what was going on that day and hour. I didn't understand exactly till 9/11/01.

I know there must be more of you who remember November 22, 1963

I remember very little; I was in first grade and we were sent home. I knew that the president had been assassinated, but I didn't know who he was or what that meant. My mother, through her tears, told me. I also remember seeing non-stop coverage on our B/W TV that seemed to last forever. I somehow knew that this was monumental news, but I didn't have anything in my life to compare it to, so I never really understood until much later how important this was.

Re: November 22nd 1963

I was at college getting ready to eat lunch. There was an announcement over the loudspeakers.

With friends I went home to the apartment I shared with Grandma. After hours watching the little black and white TV, parents on the phone, we went to the church down the street.
We prayed and sang hymns. We actually sang Kumbaya.
Music and prayer is good for the soul. We didn't know what else to do.

Then drove the hundreds of miles to my parents. We needed to be together.

I don't think JFK would have gotton us mired in Viet Nam like LBJ did. Our country would be so very different.

Me too, Don. I was a kindergartener then; my entire family went around the house crying for what seemed like days, and there was, of course, the continuous TV coverage in grainy black and white. I remember asking "When is the 'Mickey Mouse Club' (then in syndication) coming back on? Where are my cartoons?" I also remember the funeral procession, the riderless horse, the playing of the funeral march, and then John-John (who was even littler than I) saluting his father's casket.

That was when I sort of 'got it'......that little boy had lost his daddy. Barely a week later, however, four of my sister's closest friends were killed in a car accident---one of them had been a teacher's aide for my class---and THAT affected me far more directly. I remember feeling like the world was coming to an end because I'd never seen my sister so out of control emotionally; she literally cried until she threw up. I tried to comfort her, but she just pushed me away and told me to leave her alone; I didn't know, until many years later, that she had missed being killed in the same wreck because our parents decided to go out that night and left her to babysit me.

Re: November 22nd 1963

It was my 11th day at my first job, in a big state hospital. One of the patients came up and said that the president was shot. An older and wiser staff told her that we were going to lunch now, she should stop talking about things like that. Of course, when we got back from lunch, everybody was all upset. Taught me a very important lesson about communicating with psych patients. And I was surprised at how many of the patients who I thought would not care about the presidency were deeply affected. The demanded daytime television to watch the events. So I got to see much of it too.

I was in first grade. The announcement came over the loud speaker. We all put our heads down on our desks and I remember crying.
