Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act

Members of Congress, Iraq and Afghanistan War Veterans, Call for Swift Passage of Webb GI Bill
Rally on Capitol Hill for "Post-9/11 Veterans Assistance Act" (S.22/ H.R. 5740)

4/29/2008

Washington, DC— More than two hundred veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan from across the country converged on Capitol Hill Tuesday to join members of Congress in advocating immediate legislative action on Senator Webb’s "Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act" (S.22/ H.R. 5740).

The legislation boasts strong bi-partisan and bi-cameral support with 58 cosponsors in the Senate, 250 cosponsors in the House and the endorsements of the nation’s leading veterans’ organizations.

The "Post-9/11" GI Bill is designed to offer the brave men and women who have served honorably since September 11, 2001 a level of educational benefits on par with those provided to veterans of the World War II era.
The legislation will give our returning troops the tools to succeed after military service, strengthen our economy in the face of increasing global competition, and make military service more attractive as we work to rebuild our military....

Re: New GI Bill proposal, sounds good.

No matter what we give the soldiers, its not enough. I thank them everyday for being there and keeping us free. I am proud to have been in the US Army myself. No matter how we feel about the current conflicts politically, we need to stand behind the women and men of our armed services 110% and thank them for all they sacrifice.

Did I mention we need to thank them?

I think that this is a step in the right direction but I think we need to do more for the servicewomen and men. If this would mean higher taxes, I would pay them with a smile. I think we need a bill giving our soldiers full pay for at least 6 months after being honorably separated from the service in order to readjust to civilian life and to make the transition phase as easy as we can. I have written my representatives in the house and senate suggesting such a step, without much luck so far. Please join the quest in strengthening our military by ensuring them an easy transition back to civilian life if they choose to separate before retiring.

I agree, it is a step in the right direction, esp since recently discharged vets are finding that the current GI bill does not pay for much.

I think this country owes its vets a lot more than they get. My dad (a USAF vet '74-'79) went to the VA to register and they did not even consider his application. Granted, he doesn't need anything right now as he has no health issues other than glasses, but should he need something down the road, will they deny his app again?
