There is no doubt in my mind that commission of child sexual abuse is not protected by claims of property rights. In other words the state has a legitimate inherent police power to stop crime.

i can understand, steph. too often the government has in the past taken the parent role when i could have been handled well w/o their interference but in this case i don't see how it could have been handled differently
there were no neighbors who would call and inform of children being abused because they believed wholeheartly that this was the proper way to live
and bringing up waco is a point..they went in and took charge before this lead to a standoff..david koresh was a child-abusing prophet who dominated his congregation

Re: Mess in Texas-polygamy issues.

Have read all this post and the links...how mind-blowingly SICK!!!

How about rounding up the herd , all the sick old pervs and using castration, (with no anaesthesia!!), as a deterrent???

I'm sure these sick old pieces of scum would not have the energy to lay a hand on a wee girl again after that..............

There again, Torture, in it's most Painful form, thats my answer to getting shot of all the sick paedophiles, and I bet these sick evil predators would cave in and not be able to stand it.
Pass me a sharp instrument of torture..!.in the blink of an eye........well?

steph

I have to admit, I was afraid this was going to turn into another Waco. Under normal circumstances, I think government and religion should leave each other alone, but this is one case where it was right for the government to intervene. Child sexual abuse and perversion are what they are, no matter who practices them or under whose "God" they take place.

Re: Mess in Texas-polygamy issues.

Why was this allowed to continue after it was found out by the sheriff?....because I think that many of our elected officials, who are men, would love to be experiencing the same sexual romp with younger girls and were simply envious of those old bastards! Reading about the sexual activity in our capital is enough to make one sick and most of the "activity" is being done by the men. Power corrupts and men's minds tend to go straight to sex to prove their power. I am just as upset with the mothers and women of the cult as the men. I have become very inpatient with women who allow themselves to be treated like property and not think for themselves. I know that everyone has a choice in what they do in life and standing behind one's faith just does not work when it comes to such abuse. I am just so sad that words are not enought to tell how I feel. What is the human race coming to and how can we fix it? I just don't know.

Re: Mess in Texas-polygamy issues.

I had to stop and count to 20 today because a man at the post office said he did not think this story was true. I looked at him and asked why he would say that.
He looked at me with a dead serious look and said, "no father would hurt their child in such awful ways." This man is over 70, has a large family, goes to church. I wanted to hug him and hit him at the same time. I thought about what he said and figured out this man was raised in a decent home by decent parents and raised his family in the same manner. It makes me feel good to have a decent minded man for a neighbor. It makes me feel sad he would think this type of abuse does not happen. I did not attempt to convince this man the stories are true. Somehow, I just could not say the words to him that needed to be said to open his eyes to this
terrible perversity.
So, posters, what would one of you have done??

Such mixed feelings.

Your neighbor hasn't had to experience some of the human behaviors so many of us nurses have learned of.
I don't think I would have tried to convince him either. Not unless he could do something about it.
