Girl killed herself over online hoax

When a boy, "Josh," messaged her on MySpace and asked to be friends, the girl excitedly agreed. The two talked online for about six weeks, her parents said.

The messages grew nasty in October 2006, according to an FBI transcript. Josh told her he had heard she was a terrible friend and sent a string of disturbing messages and postings that said Megan was "fat" and "a ****."

The final message isn't included in the transcript: "I remember it said something like, 'The world would be a better off place without you,' " said Ron Meier, 37, who works as a machinist.

That evening, as her parents were downstairs preparing for dinner, Megan wrapped a cloth cord around her neck and hanged herself in her closet. She died the next day.

The secret was revealed six weeks later: Neighbor mother Lori Drew had pretended to be 16-year-old "Josh" to gain the trust of Meier, who had been fighting with Drew's daughter, according to police records and Meier's parents.

------------

According to a police report, Lori Drew said she "instigated and monitored" a fake account before Megan's suicide "for the sole purpose of communicating" with the girl.
I have no words. None I can use on this forum, that is.

And this so called "adult" will probably get away with it, because there doesn't seem to be a crime with which to charge her. I hope the family can at least file a civil suit against her.

not that I am condone what that women did, the girl was on anti depressants. Unfortanetly that is what pushed her over the edge.
I didn't hear if the woman was going to get charged for anything or not. I saw this on the news. Very sad.

Is there any way that we can know that the antidepressants were the cause?
Obviously this poor gal had some other issues, but this woman is stilll a criminal.

Snooping around, it seems like there might be a federal statute that would apply. The police report is on 'smoking gun'. There Drew admits she started the account and for what purpose, and then states the conversation had become "sexual for a 13 year old" and that she continued the contact in spite of that development.

My question is, why can't they nail her for that??

I don't understand what difference it makes that the girl was on antidepressants in terms of mitigating this horrible woman's actions. She will most likely claim that it was the medicine and not her hateful actions that drove this girl to suicide, but that doesn't make it so.

13 year old girls are labile beings at their baseline. What their peers think is of utmost importance to them. It's all about fitting in, wanting to be liked, being part of the group, etc. So you have all these alleged kids piling on, bullying and attacking... that's going to have some serious effects on any child that age. For a (real) kid to act like this is bad enough, but an ADULT? For her to pretend to be a cute, cool boy interested in this girl, making her think "he" was interested in her only to turn cruel and then allow others to pile on too?

My God.

The woman who did this told the police she filed a report "just in case" her property was damaged by people irate over her behaviour.

Nice.

In the police report, she stated that at the funeral she'd 'heard' the girl had attempted suicide before (I've seen nothing in any other report to that effect btw) and that made her feel "not as guilty".

If you read the story about how these monsters continued on with their relationship with the Meier family after her death... until the Meiers were tipped on their involvement, that is. Then they had the unmitigated gall to file a complaint against the Dad for harassment. If that had been my little girl, there'd be a hell of a lot more to worry about than 'harassment'.

I hope they nail her to the wall, and I hope there's a wrongful death civil suit filed too.

Re: Girl killed herself over online hoax

Ok I was not saying anything except she was on anti depressants which IMHO would probably make her vulrenable. Nothing more.
