Essentially what this data shows is that our wages have held stagnant over the past 6 years. By the time you factor in increased health, food and energy costs the middle class has seen a very real decline in living standards.

Wage growth in the 2000s: A detailed look
As shown in Figure A, the wage trends in the 2000s represent a pronounced downshift for middle- and low-wage workers relative to the late 1990s. The figure plots low, middle, and high wages, corresponding to the 10th, 50th (median), and 95th percentiles, with each series indexed to 100 in 1973.1
