Pros/ Cons of Agencies.. What would you change?

I'm thinking of searching for an agency. What would be the ideal agency to work for, I mean as far as business ethics ect. What should I be looking for as far as pay, benefits ect. ect.

Hello Entrenurse!

I see that you are new to Allnurses (as far as posting anyway), and wanted to say welcome aboard.

I have worked for Agencies in past years that were very good to me. The pay was good, the benefit of working when it was convenient for me was the best benefit, and I will no doubt do agency again. Hope you find one suitable for yourself. You'll know which agency is for you by trial and error. What works for one nurse may not work for another, so just get out there and get your feet wet and find the agency best suited for you.

What's Up

I echo the above comments. Make sure the pay is good and ask them what their cancellation rate is. I have benefits so if you are hoping to use this as a means of support you have to inquire about benefits. Make sure they have 24/7 access and not some call center in ten-buck-too. Good luck!!!!!!!!

I would say that the ideal agency is one that advocates for you....gets you work consistently and gets you a fair wage. My agency in NJ has been around since the 1980's.....I've used them off and on since 1988. They give us benefits (if you want them and commit to monthly amount of hours), one week of vacation for every 1900 hours worked, reimbursement for ACLS, 401K, credit union.

I love the pay and flexibility of my agency.

Good luck!

agencies

I feel the same way. I'm currently looking for an agency in Northern Cal. and I don't know who to work for. From calling around, it seems like most of the agencies are offering the same thing in terms of pay, benefits, etc. What do you value most when working agency? Should I trade a couple of bucks in pay rate for an agency that can get me out on the most shifts? What about beneifts? Should I expect PTO? And what rates are reasonable for a Telemetry nurse like myself in this area?

I know I ask a lot of questions, but I'm just trying to get used to the area.
