Just had an offer to do a private duty case and travel to India with an ill patient to a funeral. I thought this sounded intriguing at first, (500$ a day clear profit all expenses paid) but was put off by the thought of going out of the country around people one doesn't know.

While it sounds interesting I can think of quite a few issues that could potentially create major problems for a nurse in this situation.

Has anybody here done or know somebody who has done this? Any comments/advice to share if one is contemplating this type of work? My agency says it gets lots of requests for this from their wealthy clients.

I've never heard of that, but it sounds like a great opportunity. I can see why you'd want to get more info first. I think one of the things I'd be worried about was liability--what if something happens to your patient while you're in another country? Even if you weren't at fault, would there be a chance that you would be investigated by the authorities in that country? If you carry liability insurance, does coverage go overseas with you?

Since your agency gets so many requests from wealthy clients for this type of service, they should be able to put you in touch with other nurses who have done this type of work.

So far my agency has gotten no takers they say...LOL...so I guess most nurses have the same concerns we do about this. One never knows what to expect in a foreign country where we may not have the rights we expect in the good ol' US.

I understand OTC cough medicines have isonaizide in them the TB is so rampant in places.

Fascinating offer, tho. Were I unattached, I might have to consider it just for the adventure.

It does sound like an adventure. When I had heard of it before, I heard that they preferred ER Nurses. Cruise Nurses stand a better chance of hiring, or so I have heard, if they have ER experience. Intriguing...

The most important thing would be to find out which part of India this patient is supposed to fly to.................they have just had some torrential flooding over the past 24 hours and there are probably a million or so homeless.
India is quite a vast country, like saying that you are flying to the US, things differ so much in each of the areas, you need to find that out before making any decision.

Also look at a map and see how far that you would be flying. Depending on where you are, either to Europe and then done, or to Bangkok and then over.
How well do you do with long trip travelling? Another thing to consider.
