A Letter from my Congressman!!!! (about H-1B program)

A letter from Jim McCrery 4th district, Louisiana

May 25, 2004

Dear Ms. S.:

Thank you for contacting me regarding illegal immigration. I appreciate your taking the time to share your views with me.

On April 2, 2003, Congressman Nathan Deal of Georgia introduced H.R. 1567, the Citizenship Reform Act of 2003. This bill would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to deny citizenship at birth to children born in the United States of parents who are not citizens or permanent resident aliens. H.R. 1567 has been referred to the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security, and Claims, where it awaits further consideration.

Other bills to reduce the amount of legal and illegal immigration have been introduced during this session of Congress. Representative Thomas Tancredo of Colorado introduced H.R. 946, the Mass Immigration Reduction Act, on February 26, 2003. Notable provisions include a reduction in employment-based immigrant visas, an end to family-sponsored and diversity visas, and a reduction in the amount of refugee and asylum admissions.

Rep. Tancredo also introduced another bill to stem immigration, H.R. 2688, on July 9, 2003. This bill would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to repeal H-1B visa authority. Both H.R. 2688 and H.R. 946 have been referred to the House Committee and the Judiciary's Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security and Claims, where they have yet to be considered.

In an effort to stop states from issuing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, REp. Tancredo also introduced H.R. 3052. This bill would withhold certain funding from states that issue identification cards and driver's licenses to illegal aliens. H.R. 3052 was referred to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure's Subcommittee on Highways, Transit and Pipelines, where it awaits consideration.

As debate continues in the U.S. House of Representatives on ways to safeguard our borders, I will keep in mind your support for abolishing and the H-1B program. Again, thank you for contacting me. I hope you will continue to be in touch in the future.

Should you feel I may be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to call on me.

With kindest regards, I am

Sincerely yours,

JIM MCCRERY
Member of Congress
