I am about to graduate from nursing school and was curious as to how much experience and is there any special training I need to do agency work?

Congrats on your upcoming graduation.

Most agencies require you have acquired at least one yr experience. Even if the experience is not required, i'll definitely go for it bcos agency work requires that you do lots of things by yourself. While some hospitals just share the workload equally, others may "dump" on you and won't even look your way to see how you are doing. You really do need to be on your "feet" b/4 going agency. Just my own thoughts
Goodluck

Re: How much experience must you have?

I think it all depends on what kind of setting you are looking for. I know with Maxim, they PREFER a year but will usually take 6 months to a year at least. BUt if you are a new RN that was an LPN you usually can start working as a floor RN immediately.

Re: How much experience must you have?

Most places require a minimum of a year. However, unless you are able to function independently without assist from others except for things like lifting, it is not adviseable to be an agency nurse. Agency nurses are rarely given orientation. The staff nurses are usually rude and/or unable to help. You are expected to be able to funtion without any assist in decision making and sometimes they won't even help you get into the med room door.
