Hi! I have just taken on moderation of this forum. I have worked burns ICU but do not consider myself an "expert". We recently changed the title of this forum from "Burn ICU" to "Burn Nursing" so we could accomodate a wider interest group.

One of the things I like to establish is a resource thread where different internet sites, good texts, and other resources can be listed.

Please if you know of any good sites please post them on this thread - it will become the resource thread for burns nursing.

Here is a post-graduate degree in burns nursing - the down side would be that you have to go to Ireland to do it - on second thoughts that is not a downside - I packing my bags!!!

I worked a hem/onc/bmt unit before I moved here and I was the only nurse on the unit that wanted to float to burn and did so several times a month and I would go to the unit and sign up for OT. I was in the front part with the less serious burns as the unit was split into two. The criticals were in the back.

Just a quick question--do nurses generally need an advanced degree to work in the burn units?

No, usually you are trained in the Burn Unit. It does take a while to learn all the dressings, etc. I started in a Burn Center right out of RN school. Loved it!! The unit is a "closed" unit meaning that only Burn RNs can work there...the hospital does not "pull" RNs from us nor did we have to float to other areas. I found it to be the most challenging nursing I have ever done. I still work about one weekend every 5-6 weeks there when the unit needs help!

Thats right where i work as well, no advanced degree required, a lot of this, as aws mentioned is on the job experience and such, especially with the dressings. At my facility we dont even let OR dress our post ops, they call for us at the completeion of a surgery and our team goes up and does the dressings in the OR, it helps make sure that the dressings are correct and dont need to be redone when they get back to the unit.

I didnt go through these too much, but hopefully they may be helpful.

After oncology, working in a burn unit is another one of my interests, reading all the posts here is making me think twice about oncology. These are 2 things I would really like to do. Im not sure which i will choose, oh well, i havnt even started college yet, im sure my mind will change a million times :P
