Hello everyone,

I'm a new grad. and I just got offered a position on the burn unit at the Medical College of Virginia! I'm not sure if I will take it yet, I have another offer at the same hospital on the acute medicine floor, and I'm trying to figure out which I should take! What do some of you experienced burn nurses think about new grads. being on the burn unit? I'm leaning toward burns more than I am acute medicine...I have to get back to the recruiter next tuesday!

Hey, congratulations! I will be stalking this thread to see what folks have to say, lol.....I recently accepted a pediatric burns position and I'm a new grad,too! I am PETRIFIED but I am also very excited...I am one of two new grads being hired at this burn hospital. I dunno, for me I can just see myself being able to focus much better on a specialty than the wide range of med/surg concerns. Of course, burns affect the entire body--but it still feels like a smaller focus, and I am very driven to be an "expert" in whatever field I'm in. So I'm hoping that this will turn out to be the best choice for me, despite my fear and overwhelmed feelings....

Of course, I haven't even started yet, rotfl! I have to pass boards first....

I just graduated this past December and am in the burn unit. If your hospital provides a good orientation and the burn unit is prepared, willing, and able to accept new grads, go for it. You will have a lot to learn, but wouldn't you have a lot to learn no matter where you go? So pick the specialty that appeals to you, as long as the support is there.

I started on a burn unit as a new grad. Don't let the burn title fool you, as you will also be taking care of other acute medical needs of the patient at the same time. It's a great opportunity for you!
