Hi guys
I am in A&P I and have a question on 3rd degree burn. We are told by the book and instructor that 3rd degree burn is considered less painful because it burns your nerve endings. How come people with 3rd degree burn are in so much pain? Do they feel the pain from the muscle being burned, or is it psychological that they feel it when they were being burned?

I am not 100% sure, but, I believe the pain comes from the 2nd and 1st degree burns that abut the 3rd degree burns. If a preson is burned bad enough to have 3rd degree burns, you can bet there is plenty of area with 1st and 2nd degree burns. That is most likely where the pain is originating.

She taught our lecture yesterday. She said that what makes the full thickness/3rd degree burns so painful is that they have edges and that's where the pain is. That tissue is not burned as deep there or not at all so the nerves are still intact. The other pain that these pts often have is at the skin harvesting sites where the docs go to get the grafts. Hope this helps.

from an experiene i witnessed, the pain initially was from all the dsg changes, then as healing takes place, it is excruciating when the nerves are regenerating.

I am a former burn patient.

It really is hard to tell.

I am burned 60% with 1st, 2nd, 3rd. It is impossible to tell you where exactly the pain was..I just was in so much.
