Working for State Corrections vs Contracted Company

I recently heard a rumor that the state (WV) was taking over our medical dept at the prison. We are currently employed by CMS. Do any of you have any insight on these possible changes? I was wondering if benefits/pay rate would be better/worse? Thanks for any input.

It varies but they are relatively competitive here. .Gov jobs usually carry retirement plans.

I think the state has better benefits all around. By the way, I heard a few years ago that they were going to close the women's prison in Wheeling. Do you know if this has really happened or not? Thanks

Re: Working for State Corrections vs Contracted Company

I use to work for the State and now work for CMS. HUGE difference! Working for the State gives you better benefits, more resources and in my opinion, a decreased amount of errors in the pharmacy department. I would give anything for us to go State! We get 104 hours for the first 6 months of work and then another 104 hrs the following 6 months. At least at the State we accumulated time and seperate hours at that! 8 hours a month for sick and 8 hours a month for vacation. Then if it's a holiday (there are 12 where I am from) you receive time and a half for working the holiday and you get 8 hours on the books if you are off that day! I think you will be so much happier all the way around working for the State. They also have a grievance process that allows you to have a say in things that you don't agree with. Good luck to you!

So what ever happened to Prime care medical in West Virginia? Is CMS still in charge or did the state take over now? Thanks

PrimeCare still has the regional jails and 10 juvenile facilities.

I would opt for state every time except for one thing.

Your pay is based on the merit system. Just like any other state employee. And it's salary, not hourly. If there's a freeze on raises by the state you could go five years without a raise.
