rn s are treated very well usually by inmates and custody staff if u know ur stuff we just opened a new tta triage and the pay is very competetive with retirement and all. but its not for everyone u have to treat inmates just as u would patients from any other place respect is very important .a block is housing or tiers a clinic is just that we love to have u and u would get trainng to assist u im all for our profession rn or lvn

Just go to the website for the california department of corrections and rehabilitation. It will answer all your questions. It's union, so you must POST for a job, and it's not really scary, you have correctional officers who share the responsibility of safety with you. They are the ones you must count on, and they on you. You must always be aware, and on your toes. Too friendly is not good, and you must keep a certain distance at all times, emotionally, physically, and everything else...hahaha....kind of the opposite of what we learned in nursing... you must always just be alert and aware of the sights and sounds around you, and to help keep the environment stable, so safety will not BECOME an issue you have to deal with. Proactive stance is best. This is not a job for the faint of heart or the nonconfrontational. If you can BUCK UP, COWBOY and RIDE THAT BULL, you can be one of us! We're a close crew and rely on each other for safety and security, as well as the san quentin way of doing things. I have the utmost respect for the nurses, supervisors, and correctional officers here at the prison. They are a group who is to be admired for their caring, concern, attitude and inner strength. They have to balance everything else as well as nursing. Good luck to you, join us, we'd love to have someone on board with the same virtues and caring.

Re: San Quentin Scrubs

Hi to all you San Quentin nurses!

I am wondering if you have safety Iv's/Catheters there? I had an interview last week at San Quentin and forgot to ask them about this. The hospitals require it and I'm hoping San Quentin supplies them (if I'm lucky enough to be offered the position!). If not, do you all feel comfortable without them?

Thanks!
Liz
