Re: Pay for Correctional nurses?

I work for a Ca. Inst. and the starting pay for RN's is 7045 a month. The pay increases every year until the 5th year. We have pretty benefits too. Not all California Inst. are the same pay scale some are even more. There is never a lack for overtime so I usually range almost 10,000 a month. Beat's the pay in the ICU and less stress.

Re: Pay for Correctional nurses?

I am in Ohio, and currently the state system allows for private agencies to pay us 35.00/h at the adult penitentiary and juvenile facilities.

What are the median agency pay rates at Folsom? I am ging in on a travel assignmeny in October and need to know my negotiating stance...thank you all fellow nurses!!

Re: Pay for Correctional nurses?

Your response will read similar to mine. I am a 20 year LPN, who was a police officer in a former life. I too never saw myself working for a male juvenile detention facility. I have been here 2 years now and would really like to retire from here; we are state run. As with all state positions, the wages are lower than private industry. It USED to be the benies were always better with state facilties, but I see that rapidly changing. I am VERY low paid at $14/hr. We are ALWAYS

We are ALWAYS short staffed (we should be 4 nurses and are 3), we work 40 hrs. in 3 consectutive days (yup, that's 13.5 hr shifts from 0630 to 2000), we work alone. Working with juveniles that have horrible backgrounds can be heartbreaking and the urge to Mother them is constant. Luckily, our supervisor wants us to be "the nice guys" and show them alot of compassion (I'm a nurse for gosh sakes!). Having my law enforcement background helps me alot with security issues. In corrections, there is always the chance of physical danger/injury and you are S.O.L. if there is a hostage situation. All in all though, I do love my job here more than all the other nursing jobs I have done over the years.
