Just like in any other new position, you walk that fine line between making sure you observe enough to get the culture down, and diving in to get that hands-on experience. Corrections is a unique area - you are correct that ED will be EXTREMELY helpful experience as your assessment skills will need to be top notch (psych also a good background.) As in most areas of nursing, what you see/hear is not always what you get with patients. You may notice much more of a discrepancy between report of the pt and what you find on assessment than in other areas. Be open-minded. Good luck! Hope you do fabulously!
