Is it hard to get in?

I have the Med Calculations Test this Thursdays my co-worker who's ahead of me in the process told me don't worry about it. I would really like to get in.I'm burnout with Acute Care nursing. It's Staff RN with the Sheriff's Dept. Is it competitive to get in? My co-worker already got hired just awaiting background check which can take up to 2 months. Why so long? How extensive will it be? I'm clean nothing to hide.

Re: Is it hard to get in?

As long as you are clean, it shouldn't be too hard to get hired on. Finding nurses to work in corrections isn't always easy. It's a good job and is MUCH better than the hospital, but just the thought of a jail freaks a lot of people out.

The backgrounds can be very basic or way extensive. Some of the basic backgrounds can take less than a week. Our federal prisons like to take two months to clear people. They have the FBI investigate you, talk to neighbors, etc. So far, the only ones that I have found to do this are in the federal system.

Hope this helps. Good luck on your new career.

Re: Is it hard to get in?

My background check took forever to clear...waiting is the hardest part as the Dept of Corrections and LE move at the speed of snails processing your paperwork. It has been 4.5 months since I started doing paperwork with them and I still have to do the interview. They drag their feet and I hate this.

Re: Is it hard to get in?

It takes a while to do your background check on your law carreer and if you are even a registered nurse. We have people that have applied to the position that didn't even have a license to practice much less. So while they are going through your report, just take it easy and the paper work will be done very soon.

Re: Is it hard to get in?

LPN's go through the same process as RN's. The DOC of Oregon is always looking for nurses.
