Georgia Correctional Healthcare

I'm a new LPN grad with no actual work experience, just the required 700 plus hours required of clinical. I am interested in correctional facility nursing and understand that the nurses in the Georgia state prisons are contracted out through Georgia Correctional Healthcare. I can't seem to find any information and I'd like to know if they hire new grads w/o any hospital experience? I'm finding my opportunities are almost non existent unless I want to go into LTC, which, I don't.

Thumbs up

Where are you trying to find a job at in Ga.? Not everything here is under GCH. I work for PHS and run both a county jail and a county prison out of one facility. Now things are different from state run camps to county run state camps. I know that this sounds like Greek, but when you work for the system, you get a better feel for it. I don't know how other places do their hiring, but one of my best nurses came to me out of nursing school. We actually held the job until she got her hard copy of her license. Sometimes it is better to go into corrections, I think, without a lot of different experiences or opinions formed. Good luck if you do go into the corrections field. I have been in it for 7 years, and don't want to go back to the other nursing fileds.

I am interested in the central GA area from Macon to McDonough. I live closer to Macon, but wouldn't mind a small commute. Specifically, I was interested in the Diagnostic Center at Jackson.

Maybe you could call them at (770) 504-2000. When the prison answers the phone tell them you want the prison infirmary. When they get you transferred to the infirmary a nurse can give you specific information. Good luck

The Medical College of Georgia hires health care providers for the Georgia Department of Corrections. If you look under Georgia Department of Corrections, you should be able to find information about jobs available. The pay is not great, but the hours and benefits are good.
