I have worked for both PHS and CMS. I was given proper orientation at PHS but only 2 days orientation at CMS. CMS in Georgia was really hurting for nurses and I thought I'd give it a try since they picked up the contract that PHS lost shortly after I left previously. I think it's not so much the companies as it is the administrator for the company where you live. My administrator was nuts.

I work corrections in Indiana as a state nurse.Our medical department has been run by PHS the last few years.It has been a adjustment from the way it used to be,but I think it reflects what is going on in the street with budget tightening.Later this summer nursing will be going private and the 2 agencies in the running to take over nursing are PHS and CMS. This is cost cutting and saving more $ for this state.The bad part with either is whoever wins the contract the perks of our jobs will be gone and we won't be state nurses anymore.. We have fine benefits with the way it is now,the private company won't be able to compare,esp.when you have been state nurse a while.Whoever wins the contract will inherit many headaches, and one will be nurses to staff the prisons.I myself will ride this out right now and see who wins,but I for one will plan on being out of there once the takeover is done.Just thought to add my 2 cents on this.Thanks!!

I work in pa state prison sci somerset phs is our service provider but nursing is still state employed Seems to be changes are in the wind not sure what but sounds like privatization. we have 2300 inmates, in the last year things have gone to hell. but the nsg staff are still trying very hard to maintain good practice and work for the better good of all. Dont see much point in hanging around any longer than i need to, its going to really go down the tubes in th enext year or so. All PHS is worried about is money and maintaining their jobs

Found out late this afternoon CMS underbid PHS in the state of Indiana and as a result CMS will take over medical care in our state on 1 Sept. 05. We as state nurses will lose our jobs with the state along with perks.It is the beginning of a long process and ideally effective ommunication from both side.Wewill see-just thought to post it here.
