California Correctional Facility Nursing

I am interested in attaining a job at either Salinas Valley State Prison or the Men's Colony in San Luis Obispo. I have taken the online exam ranking me at 85%, which is in tier 5. I have military experience that hopefully increases that ranking, as the top three are 100% and above. Does anyone have any experience they can relay to me in regards to this list and what the expected wait is until I am able to apply, interview for a job? Calls to the state job board and prison contact have not been returned or they have not known the answer to any questions.

Start here http://www.cdcr.ca.gov/. Navigate through the careers tab. What area are you looking for? What do you know of nursing in the state corrections? Keep me posted on any other questions you may have and I will try to let you know what I know.

Print out an application from the California website and turn it into personnel. Or you can wait for them to send you a job inquiry. The wait varies. I'm not sure if all institutions you apply for will send you an inquiry.

Re: California Correctional Facility Nursing

From what I understand these jobs are very competitive. Although San Quentin seems to always have a help wanted sign up. Is there anything I can do as I wait for a job inquiry?...such as involvig myself in sometype of work experience to insure me getting hired...I am excited about the opportunity to work in a CA facility and a telemetry nurse now......maybe you can dispell some myths....I have been told to take a part-time position to get my foot in the door(as I am looking for a full time position)..... true?...thanks for any suggestions you forward on to me

Yes, it's very competitive. As I said, I would print out an app. and send it in; then follow up with a phone call. It may speed up your inquiry. If you wait for the inquiry they will send you a letter asking you to fill out and send in the application by a certain date, and of course this just delays the process.
You were given good advice when told to try to get your foot in the door part time. Many part-timers get priority to get in full time. Sadly, it really is who you know many of the times IMO.

Re: California Correctional Facility Nursing

Hi Ms Mischief, thanks for the info. I have received a date to interview for corrections nurse (safety)! Without any corrections experience I am trying to do some research now to help me out in the interview process. Any words of advice?
