Since being in corrections, I as a nurse as well as my other coworkers have
not been trained in first response emergency care. Many of us nurses have never worked as an EMT but are expected to respond like one during a code situation all the while with cameras in our faces

. First response requires not only a certain aspect of knowledge but mechanics as well that require not only to be initially taught but reviewed periodically.
As nurses we are taught in school via classroom and clinicals, hospital, nursing home, and mental health types of care. But briefly at best were we ever introduced to first on the scene care. I have resorted to utilizing books and asking questions of fellow nurses for scenarios and techniques to use in emergency response situations.
Over the past few years we have lobbied for this essential training but as yet come away empty handed

. I understand that the allmighty dollar has something to do with the problem. Are there any other correctional nurses who have the same issues where they work? Any suggestions as to how to rectify this situation?
