Im not sure about the issue with LPNs, sorry. I would consult the CGFNS themselves by calling or emailing? I attained my visascreen from the CGFNS when I sent them my new US license etc. I didnt have to write the CGFNS exam because I came from an English speaking country.

I am a NICU nurse trained and working in Canada. My husband and I and our two children are debating a move to the US for "a few years" for a little life experience. Can anyone shed some light on the following questions?

1. I passed my NCLEX exams in Denver Colorada right after I graduated in 1994 but have never worked in the states. Would this be valid in other states and would it still be valid.

2. My husband would also like to work in the states. He is a journeyman plumber which also appears to be another in demand job in the states. Could we both get TN work visas?

Any advice or possible resources to check out would be greatly appreciated

About number 1, What about checking your expiry date, you should have this on your license? Also call the Colorado state nursing board and ask them about your status. My initial license was in Minnesota then I paid a fee to get another one in Washington DC. I had to prove that I had one etc. Just call the individual state boards and ask. I like to talk to a live person when it comes to these kinds of things.
About number 2, you could both get TN visa's but research this option. Call the Canadian/US border and talk to a TN specialist. There is information on the web, like sample letters from a prospective employer, one of things you need to bring with you to the border. YOu must be offered employment first before you go and have the letter to present at the border with the other paper work, like your visascreen.

You must have a license to get a job if you are going to NY, no employer will hire you if you can't work, think about it. The issue with NY needs to be cleared up first.

There is not one thing that immigration can do until that is taken care of.

I am confused ......I have a Canadian Passport and NCLEX . I have a Nursing degree and R.N. Do I need CGFNS and TN Visa to work in US?
I have just looked at a link from this site to CGFNS 2006 FEE SCHEDULE.....
how on earth does anyone make sense of it. There are about 20 different headings and fees.........how would I know what it would cost me? Why make it so complex if the US wants and needs Canadian Nurses? Is there an easy way to do this? How long does CGFNS take?

I started my process in in Sept to apply for permission to write the nclex. I went with minnesota because I read that it was faster. I must say, it was less complicated than Georgia's application. My question to you is after I write the nclex and get a license for minnesota, will georgia endorse it even if I have never worked in Minnesota. Do you have any Idea how long it takes to get Endorsed? I would like to be in Georgia by June.

Hey all, I just wanted to add my 2 cents worth here. I have just come back from working in the US so hopefully my info will be up to date. All Canadians that want to go down and work in the USA need to apply to a US state for a RN license and take the NCLEX you also need to go through CGFNS for a visa screen. The visa screen is needed for the TN or trade NAFTA visa which allows us to be able to work in the USA and also to verify that our education matches what they require there nurse to have (not sure if this is still needed for those that have a green card).
I got my original license in MN then had it endorsed to TX license. I do believe that the NCLEX is only good for 4 years and if you have not used it to gain a license then it needs to be rewritten. I also know that if you have not kept the original license then you will need to reapply for it all over again.
I don't know if this answered any of your questions and hopefully if I made a mistake then I know that someone out there will correct me.
