Canadian RN exam info required

Hi!
I am a UK registered RN, living and working in Alberta. I have to take the Canadian RN exam and wondered if anyone could tell me where I can find test papers etc. I have one book - The Canadian RN prep guide but I have done all the questions and need more practice! Is the US NCLEX similar - is it worth using NCLEX study guides - there seem to be loads of them.
Thanks for your help.

The NCLEX is quite different, so I wouldn't bother. If you're doing well at that exam guide, you'll be fine for the exam.

Canadian RN exam

Ransome,

Fergus51 is giving you some excellent advice and I will add my experience of preparing for the RN exam. I did use the guide and I think I averaged around 75% on the tests but I also used NCLX review books since this helped me prepare for doing hours of test questions and helped me watch for key words in the questions.

The NCLX is very different from the Canadian RN exam but I found it helpful. Pay special attention to the questions that ask for the nurse's best response they will appear again before you are finished.

Do both the Canadian and US NCLEX?

The only difference I found in the US exam compared to Canadian exam is the lab values, and certain medications.

Hope this helps.

Smile Canadian RN exam

I used both the canadian prep guide and some american nclex books. I found they helped. The Canadian exam is definitely more pshyco-social than the american. Be prepared for that.

good luck!!

Re: Canadian RN exam info required

The Substantively Equivalent Competency Assessment is an examination of your education to ensure it meets Canadian standards. There have been people from the UK whose obstetrical education or their psychiatric education did not meet the requirements and they were required to then take and pass a refresher before being approved to sit the Canadian Registered Nurse Exam. Over the past few years it has gotten much tougher to gain credentials in Canada as each province enacts health care professions legislation. This legislation has a lot of new clauses that were never included before, such as continuing competency, public access to disciplinary decisions, regulation of transferred functions, greater inclusion of the general public to regulatory bodies and many others.

Entry to practice competencies for Alberta can be found here:

http://www.nurses.ab.ca/pdf/Entry-to...mpetencies.pdf

This might help you to know if you're going to have a lot of work ahead, or only a little. Good luck!

Re: Canadian RN exam info required

Hi there.
I did my initial training in the UK as a "Project 2000" nurse and moved to Canada last year. I did not have to undergo the SEC, so I am sorry that I can not be much help there. However if there is anything further, please let me know. Good Luck! When do you have the SEC?
