Can an LPN in the states work as a nurse in Canada?

Politically speaking, I'm not sure the states are where I belong anymore...
I am curious as to if I'll be able to work as an LPN? Does anybody know?
Also I am wondering if you have long term care facilities similiar to what we have in the states?
Any info would be appreciated!

Default lpn work in Canada
nursegoodguy,
Each province seems to be at a slightly different place in terms of how they utilize lpns. Contacting the licensing body in each province is the best way to find out if you are qualified to pracitce there. ie
http://www.rpnao.org/home.asp for Ontario
http://www.malpn.mb.ca for Manitoba
http://www.clpn.bc.ca/index.htm for British Colombia
and
http://www.lpnboard.ns.ca for Nova Scotia

There are probably sites for all the other provinces they just may have slightly different names (Ontario lpns are Registered Practical Nurses)

I'm in BC and we are currently expanding the roles of lpns in acute care as well as extended care.
Good Luck

In Ontario, most RPN's ( your LPN's) are restricted to homecare or long term care. Very few hospitals use them.

I know at my hospital they where phased out approx six or seven years ago.

Can not speak for other areas. Best to do your research.

The scope for LPNs tends to be more restricted in BC than in the states I worked in.

Well here in Northern Ontario the hospital and some long term facilities were just hiring RPN's (LPN).

I think you're going to have to do your research and most definately get in touch with the proper authorities through the links posted up above.

I'm an RPN in Sudbury, Ontario. Our hosptial utilizes the RPN's to their full scope of practice. At work, I do dressings, Medication, IV's (initiation of IV's this summer), basically everything an RN does (without starting blood transfusions) but with stable patients. I work on an active Medical Floor. Every city utilizes the RPN's diffrently. Some to the full scope of practice and some as a glorified PSW.

I live about 1 hour north of Toronto and our local hospital uses RPNs to their full scope of practice. RPNs work in most areas of our hospital.Best of luck to you.
