Most hospitals still hire RPNs. What areas they can work in varies. In my area hospitals are very RPN friendly and we can work in most areas. I have a friend that works in surgery, one works in periatrics, one works in mental health and one works in the ER.
Mount Sinai, Sick Kids and Brampton Civic are a few of the places that don't hire RPNs.

Thank you for your info. I'm in Toronto now. Many hospitals are still hiring RPN here?? What do you think RPN to RN bridge program??

I live north of the city and I don't know what the job situation is in Toronto right now. You would have to check with the individual facilities to check for job postings.

I would check the hospitals websites to see if they hire RPN's. Some do and some don't. They used to be hired at all hospitals but there has been a trend away from that however now that the BSN in the only way to get your RN, that has been changing but very slowly. If you want permanent full time work, you will not likely get it at an acute care hospital at least not for many years unless you get your RN. You are more likely to get permanent full time work at a nursing home or some chronic care type units. There will be lots of temp RPN positions for the summer though which may be a way to start and if all goes well you may get kept on as casual in the fall in which you would then wait for a part time position as almost all hospitals are unionized. St. Joe's hospital in Hamilton hires RPN's, check their website. Sorry to sound negative but nursing requirements in Ontario have changed and it is going to take some hospitals time to figure out what they will do with it.

Which program is better is a matter of personal opinion.You must decide what is important to you and decide which path is best for you.
